A TV foi minha babá quando eu era criança, e não de arrependo disso nem um pouco. Aqueles anos no sofá da sala assistindo Perdidos no Espaço e Thunderbirds ajudaram a me preparar para a vida profissional.
Entre tantas séries americanas, britânicas e japonesas (como National Kid) eu tinha carinho especial pelo Vigilante Rodoviário. Ali estava uma série brasileira honesta, ingênua e empolgante. Eu não via os cenários de Los Angeles ou Londres, mas a minha São Paulo. As histórias eram simples e envolventes. Bandidos de todos os tipos eram perseguidos pelo comandante Carlos e seu fiel cão Lobo a bordo de sua moto Harley-Davidson ou do possante Simca Tufão.
Carlos Miranda, que nasceu no Bairro da Mooca em 1933, ficou muito popular com a série e acabou se tornando membro de verdade da Polícia Rodoviária. Conversei com ele uma vez para um perfil de fã que escrevi para a revista VIP.
O Vigilante Carlos partiu aos 91 anos, num momento em que não tenho tido mais orgulho da indústria audio-visual brasileira. Sua lembrança fica no reino da nostalgia, a bordo do Simca, com o bravo Lobo ao seu lado. Ao fundo, os anjos tocam suas harpas e cantam seu tema:
"De noite ou de dia, firme no volante / vai pela rodovia, bravo Vigilante / Guardando toda estrada , forte e confiante / É o nosso camarada, bravo Vigilante / O seu olhar amigo /é um farol que nos avisa do perigo / Audaz e temerário prá agir a cada instante / Da estrada o vigilante / Vigilante Rodoviário"
The importance of Vigilante Carlos
TV was my babysitter when I was a child, and I don't regret it one bit. Those years on the living room couch watching Lost in Space and Thunderbirds helped prepare me for my professional life.
Among so many American, British and Japanese series (like National Kid), I had a special fondness for Vigilante Rodoviário. It was an honest, naive and exciting Brazilian series. I didn't see the Los Angeles or London settings, but my São Paulo. The stories were simple and engaging. Criminals of all kinds were pursued by Commander Carlos and his faithful dog Lobo aboard his Harley-Davidson motorcycle or the powerful Simca Tufão.
Carlos Miranda, who was born in the Mooca neighborhood in 1933, became very popular with the series and ended up becoming a real member of the Highway Patrol. I spoke to him once for a fan profile I wrote for VIP magazine.
Carlos the Watchman passed away at the age of 91, at a time when I have lost all pride in the Brazilian audiovisual industry. His memory remains in the realm of nostalgia, aboard the Simca, with the brave Wolf at his side. In the background, the angels play their harps and sing his theme:
"Night or day, firmly at the wheel / He goes down the highway, brave Watchman / Guarding the entire road, strong and confident / He is our comrade, brave Watchman / His friendly gaze / is a beacon that warns us of danger / Bold and reckless to act at every moment / On the road the watchman / Highway Patrolman"
